Respite Care at Home for Families and Carers

Short-term, dependable cover at home so the person who does the caring can stop for a while.

Is this the right support?

Respite care is support arranged so that a family carer can have a break. Crucially, this is respite at home — we come to the person being cared for, in their own house. Nobody has to be moved into a residential setting for a week.

Most family carers we speak to have not had a proper break in a very long time, and have usually been told to 'look after themselves' by someone who did not offer a practical way to do it. Respite is that practical way.

How we can help

  • A regular weekly break — the same slot each week, so you can plan around it.
  • Cover for appointments — your own health matters too.
  • Time to work — cover during shifts or a working day.
  • Support during a holiday — increased visits while you are away.
  • Cover in an emergency — subject to availability at the time.
  • Continuing the usual routine — we follow your routine, not ours.

For you and your family

What that means in practice

The difference this makes for the person receiving care — and for the family around them.

Rest is not indulgence

Carer exhaustion is one of the most common reasons a home arrangement breaks down. Regular respite is what keeps a sustainable arrangement sustainable.

It follows the existing routine

We work to how things are already done — the same meals, the same order, the same way of doing things — so there is no upheaval to come back to.

Predictable and plannable

Booked visits at agreed times mean you can commit to something: a class, a job, a lunch, a proper night's sleep.

Being clear about what we do

Respite through Luxuricare is delivered as care visits at home, using the same visit lengths and rates as our other services. It is not residential respite in a care home — nobody moves anywhere.

Our usual daytime visits run between 6:00am and 9:00pm. Where respite needs to extend beyond that, overnight cover can be arranged according to assessed needs and staffing — a planned night visit, a sitting service, a sleeping night or a waking night. Our overnight care and live-in care pages explain how each works.

If you need cover urgently, please call us on 07720 829727 and we will tell you honestly what we can and cannot do at that moment.

What families say

Given to Luxuricare directly

David HorneBurton upon Trent

“Lyndsey formed a lovely relationship with my Dad and was kind and supportive with my Mum despite Mums mood swings and increasing aggressive behaviour. She was always reassuring and kept me well informed, appreciating my difficulties following surgery and not living locally. Her professional manner helped me make difficult decisions when it became apparent my parents needs couldn’t be met in their home.

“I cant thank my dads amazing carers enough for all they do for him and my mum & the massive help they are to me. Today they have taken my dad on his birthday trip to Twycross zoo. he’s been so excited and is having the best time with them these ladies didn’t have to do this they wanted to because they care.”

“The gentleman pictured is my uncle. It’s been a rough 12 months, diagnosed with Parkinson’s and lost his wife of 52 years in January. Lyndsey was introduced to myself and my uncle around 10 months ago and it’s difficult to put into words how positive her impact has been. It isn’t just ‘care’ but ‘caring’.

Questions about respite care

How much notice do you need?

More notice always helps us schedule properly, but please ask whatever the timescale. Rather than quote a fixed notice period we cannot guarantee, we would rather you call and get a straight answer about that week.

Can respite be regular rather than one-off?

Yes, and for most families a regular weekly or twice-weekly visit is far more useful than an occasional block. It is easier to keep going when you know a break is coming.

Will you follow the routine we already have?

Yes. At the assessment we write down how things are currently done — meals, timings, preferences, the little rules that matter — and that becomes the care plan.

Do you provide overnight or live-in respite?

Yes, subject to assessment and staffing. Daytime respite is delivered as visiting care calls — the shortest we offer on its own is 30 minutes, and our usual rounds run between 6:00am and 9:00pm. Beyond that we can arrange a planned night visit, a sitting service, a sleeping night, a waking night or a live-in package. What is possible depends on the assessment and on who is available, so please call and we will give you a straight answer about your dates rather than a promise we cannot keep.
