Live-In Care at Home

A carer lives in the home and supports daily life, so someone can stay where they want to be rather than move into residential care.

Is this the right support?

Live-in care means exactly what it says: a carer moves into the home and provides support through the day as set out in the agreed care package. For a lot of families it is the alternative to a care home — the point at which visiting calls are no longer enough, but nobody wants to give up the house, the garden, the neighbours and the cat.

It suits someone whose needs have grown beyond a few visits a day, someone recently home from hospital who needs a settled period of support, or a couple who want to stay together rather than be separated by a residential placement. It also works as a temporary arrangement while a family works out what happens next.

How we can help

  • Personal care through the day — washing, dressing and the daily routine, unhurried.
  • Meals and drinks — cooked in the person's own kitchen, to their own taste.
  • Medication support — as set out in the care plan and in line with our policies and training.
  • Household routine — laundry, tidying and keeping the home running normally.
  • Company and companionship — someone there, which is often the whole point.
  • Getting out and about — appointments, shopping and keeping life going outside the house.

For you and your family

What that means in practice

The difference this makes for the person receiving care — and for the family around them.

Home stays home

No packing up a life into one room. Familiar surroundings, the same bed, the same routine — which for someone living with dementia in particular can matter more than anything else on this page.

Built around one household

A live-in package is written for the specific person and the specific home, not selected from a menu. What the carer does, and when, is agreed with you before anyone moves in.

Couples can stay together

Where two people need support, live-in care can often keep them in the same house rather than in two different places.

Being clear about what we do

How rest periods work — and why it matters. A live-in carer is not a machine, and nobody can work around the clock safely. Your carer has agreed rest and break periods, typically around two hours each day. Where the care package requires it, another carer covers that period, so support continues.

We are deliberately clear about this because some providers imply one person is awake and available every hour of every day. That is not how live-in care works anywhere, and it would not be safe. If continuous overnight support is also needed, that is arranged as part of the package — see our overnight care page.

Live-In Care is quoted as a tailored package rather than a published rate, because what it involves varies enormously between households.

What families say

Given to Luxuricare directly

David HorneBurton upon Trent

“Lyndsey formed a lovely relationship with my Dad and was kind and supportive with my Mum despite Mums mood swings and increasing aggressive behaviour. She was always reassuring and kept me well informed, appreciating my difficulties following surgery and not living locally. Her professional manner helped me make difficult decisions when it became apparent my parents needs couldn’t be met in their home.

“I cant thank my dads amazing carers enough for all they do for him and my mum & the massive help they are to me. Today they have taken my dad on his birthday trip to Twycross zoo. he’s been so excited and is having the best time with them these ladies didn’t have to do this they wanted to because they care.”

“The gentleman pictured is my uncle. It’s been a rough 12 months, diagnosed with Parkinson’s and lost his wife of 52 years in January. Lyndsey was introduced to myself and my uncle around 10 months ago and it’s difficult to put into words how positive her impact has been. It isn’t just ‘care’ but ‘caring’.

Questions about live-in care

How much does live-in care cost?

Live-in care is priced on request, as a tailored package. There is no standard published rate, because the level of support, the hours of cover and whether a second carer is needed all differ from one household to the next. Tell us the situation and we will quote for it properly.

Does one carer work 24 hours a day?

No, and you should be wary of anyone who says otherwise. Your live-in carer has agreed rest and break periods — typically around two hours a day. Where the care package requires it, cover is arranged so support continues during that period. The whole arrangement is written into the care plan before care begins.

What about nights?

Overnight support is arranged as part of the package. Depending on what is needed, that may be a sleeping night or a waking night — our overnight care page explains the difference and how each is priced.

What does the carer need from us?

Somewhere of their own to sleep and take breaks, and normal use of the kitchen and bathroom. We will go through the practicalities honestly at the assessment, including whether the home is suitable.

Can live-in care be temporary?

Yes. It is often used for a fixed period — after a hospital stay, while a family carer takes a break, or while longer-term decisions are being made.

Is live-in care better than a care home?

It is different, not automatically better. Live-in care keeps someone at home with one-to-one support; a care home provides a staffed building with on-site cover around the clock. We will give you an honest view of which fits, including when the honest answer is residential care.
