Overnight Care at Home

Waking nights and sleeping nights — support through the hours when families worry most.

Is this the right support?

Nights are when most families reach the end of what they can manage. Someone gets up repeatedly, becomes disoriented in the dark, needs help to the bathroom, or is simply not safe on their own between bedtime and morning. The person doing the worrying rarely gets any sleep either.

Overnight care puts a carer in the home through those hours. It is often arranged alongside daytime visits, as part of a live-in package, or on its own for a fixed period after an illness or a fall.

How we can help

  • Settling at night — help getting ready for bed and comfortable.
  • Support to the bathroom — the most common reason overnight care is arranged.
  • Repositioning and comfort — where this is part of the agreed care plan.
  • Reassurance during the night — particularly where confusion or anxiety disturbs sleep.
  • Medication support — where doses fall outside normal visiting hours.
  • Morning handover — getting the day started and passing on anything that happened.

For you and your family

What that means in practice

The difference this makes for the person receiving care — and for the family around them.

Waking nights

The carer stays awake and available throughout the night. This is the right choice where support is needed several times, or where someone is at real risk of falling if they get up alone.

Sleeping nights

The carer is permitted to sleep in the home and can be woken to help when it is necessary. A sleeping night includes up to three occasions of being woken; if help is needed more than three times, the night is treated as a waking night and additional charges apply. This suits someone who is mostly settled overnight but should not be alone in the house.

Family gets to sleep

The practical effect is often felt most by the relative who has been listening out every night for months. That is a legitimate reason to arrange it.

Being clear about what we do

How overnight care is priced. Overnight Care is priced according to the hours and the type of support required. Contact Luxuricare for a tailored quotation.

The two variables are how long the cover runs — six hours, eight hours, ten hours or another arrangement — and whether it is a waking night or a sleeping night. A waking night costs more than a sleeping night, because the carer is awake and working throughout. We do not publish a fixed figure because quoting one would be misleading.

Where a sleeping night becomes a waking night. A sleeping night includes up to three occasions of being woken. If assistance is required more than three times, the night is treated as a waking night and additional charges apply. We tell you this before care starts rather than after a difficult night, and the additional cost is confirmed in your quotation following an assessment.

Which type is appropriate is a safety question as much as a cost one. If someone genuinely needs support several times a night, we will say so rather than quoting for a sleeping night because it is cheaper.

What families say

Given to Luxuricare directly

David HorneBurton upon Trent

“Lyndsey formed a lovely relationship with my Dad and was kind and supportive with my Mum despite Mums mood swings and increasing aggressive behaviour. She was always reassuring and kept me well informed, appreciating my difficulties following surgery and not living locally. Her professional manner helped me make difficult decisions when it became apparent my parents needs couldn’t be met in their home.

Today they have taken my dad on his birthday trip to Twycross zoo. he’s been so excited and is having the best time with them these ladies didn’t have to do this they wanted to because they care.”

“The gentleman pictured is my uncle. It’s been a rough 12 months, diagnosed with Parkinson’s and lost his wife of 52 years in January. Lyndsey was introduced to myself and my uncle around 10 months ago and it’s difficult to put into words how positive her impact has been. It isn’t just ‘care’ but ‘caring’.

Questions about overnight care

What is the difference between a waking night and a sleeping night?

These are two different services. On a waking night the carer remains awake throughout the night and is available to provide support as required. On a sleeping night the carer is permitted to sleep but can be woken to help when necessary.

A sleeping night includes up to three occasions of being woken. If assistance is required more than three times, it is treated as a waking night and additional charges apply. Waking nights are for people who need regular support through the night; sleeping nights are for people who are usually settled but should not be alone.

How much does overnight care cost?

Overnight Care is priced according to the hours and type of support required. Contact Luxuricare for a tailored quotation — we cannot publish a single figure honestly, because a six-hour sleeping night and a ten-hour waking night are very different pieces of work.

How many hours does overnight cover run for?

It is agreed with you. Six, eight and ten hours are all common, and the start and finish times are set around the household's actual routine rather than a standard shift.

Can we have overnight care just for a short period?

Yes. It is often arranged for a few weeks after a hospital discharge, a fall or a change in health, and then reviewed.

Can overnight care be combined with daytime visits?

Yes, and it frequently is. Overnight cover, daytime care calls and live-in care can all be combined into one package.

What if we are not sure which type we need?

That is what the free assessment is for. We will look at what actually happens overnight and recommend honestly — including if the answer is that you do not need overnight cover yet.
