Medication Support at Home

Prompting, reminding and administering medication — in line with the care plan, our policies and each carer's training and competency.

Is this the right support?

Medication is one of the most common reasons a short daily visit is arranged. Tablets get missed, doses get doubled, or a blister pack quietly stops being opened — and the consequences build up slowly enough that nobody notices for weeks.

For some people a short, well-timed call is all that is needed. For others, medication support sits alongside personal care within a longer visit.

How we can help

  • Prompting and reminding — a knock at the right time, every day.
  • Administering medication — where the care plan requires it and the carer is trained and assessed as competent.
  • Support with a dosette or blister pack — as set out in the care plan.
  • Recording what was taken — logged on Birdie at the visit, not from memory later.
  • Noticing changes — flagging refusals, side effects or a pack that is not going down.
  • Ordering and collection prompts — help keeping repeat prescriptions on track.
  • Working with the pharmacy and GP — telling you when something needs their input.

For you and your family

What that means in practice

The difference this makes for the person receiving care — and for the family around them.

Only as long as it needs to be

You do not need to buy more time than the task requires. For most people a 30-minute call at £20 covers medication properly and still leaves room to check how they are — which is the part a rushed visit loses.

Written records, not recollection

Every medication prompt is recorded at the time in Birdie, so there is an accurate account rather than a best guess a fortnight later.

Clear boundaries, stated plainly

Exactly what your carer will do with medication is written into the care plan before care starts. You will know precisely where the line sits.

Being clear about what we do

What our carers can do. Luxuricare carers support people with their medication — prompting, reminding, and administering it — in line with the agreed care plan, our medication policy, and the training and competency assessment each carer has completed. What happens at your visits is agreed and written down before care begins.

Where the line sits. We are a home care service, not a nursing service. We do not prescribe and we do not make clinical decisions about medication. Anything that involves changing a prescription is a matter for the GP, pharmacist or district nursing team, and we will tell you when something needs their input rather than acting on it ourselves.

Medication support is part of personal care operationally — it often happens during the same visit. It has its own page because families frequently do not realise the support is available at all. See our personal care page for how the rest of a visit works.

What families say

Given to Luxuricare directly

David HorneBurton upon Trent

“Lyndsey formed a lovely relationship with my Dad and was kind and supportive with my Mum despite Mums mood swings and increasing aggressive behaviour. She was always reassuring and kept me well informed, appreciating my difficulties following surgery and not living locally. Her professional manner helped me make difficult decisions when it became apparent my parents needs couldn’t be met in their home.

“I cant thank my dads amazing carers enough for all they do for him and my mum & the massive help they are to me. Today they have taken my dad on his birthday trip to Twycross zoo. he’s been so excited and is having the best time with them these ladies didn’t have to do this they wanted to because they care.”

“The gentleman pictured is my uncle. It’s been a rough 12 months, diagnosed with Parkinson’s and lost his wife of 52 years in January. Lyndsey was introduced to myself and my uncle around 10 months ago and it’s difficult to put into words how positive her impact has been. It isn’t just ‘care’ but ‘caring’.

Questions about medication support

How long does a medication visit need to be?

A 30-minute call at £20 is the shortest visit we offer on its own — it covers the medication and still leaves time to notice how someone is. Where medication support sits alongside washing, dressing or breakfast, a 45-minute call at £27 is more realistic. We will say honestly which one fits rather than selling you the shortest option.

Can carers actually give the medication, or only remind?

Both, depending on what the care plan says and what the individual carer is trained and assessed as competent to do. Some people need only a prompt; others need their medication administered. It is agreed with you and written into the care plan before care starts.

Can your carers give injections or change dressings?

Those are nursing tasks and sit with the district nursing team or GP rather than with a home care service. If someone's needs move into that territory, we will say so plainly rather than taking it on.

Is medication support part of personal care?

Operationally, yes — it usually happens during the same visit as washing, dressing or breakfast. It has its own page because a lot of families simply do not know we can help with medication at all, and end up managing it themselves for far longer than they need to.

What if a dose is refused or missed?

It is recorded at the visit and escalated according to the care plan. You will not find out weeks later by accident.

Do you handle the prescription ordering?

We can prompt and help keep repeat prescriptions on track as part of a visit. The exact arrangement is agreed with you in advance and written down.
